What if we are creating a shortage of girls who play video games because we are telling them that gaming is a masculine activity, just as we did with math and science?

That’s the first thing that came to my mind when I read this article on kotaku.com about the difference in gender representation in gaming. I agree that this is a serious issue that needs to be talked about. Yet, the more you talk about it, the more girls get the idea that gaming is not for them because it is a masculine activity.

It’s just like we did with math and science. When girls get higher grades and more girls than boys apply for STEM majors, we talk about how there is a shortage of STEM majors for girls. I get it. Women had less chances to be scientists or engineers in the past. However, this is not the case anymore, but we are still talking about it. The more we talk about it, the more girls get the idea that math and science is for boys and they need to be more feminine. It’s not a lack of opportunity, it’s a lack of interest.
