If the US is as much of an autarkic economy as people claim, why is the dollar so strong?

\------------

I keep seeing people point out how the US has a large, self sufficient economy that relies very little on international trade. If that's the case, it seems like other countries would be much more eager to buy up dollars to buy stuff from then other countries, as well as the US. But if the US is as large as people like to claim, our economy is mostly closed off from the rest of the world and relies mostly on domestic demand and domestic businesses to drive our economy. If the US as a whole was much more autarkic, other countries would like have much less reason to demand our currency to buy our exports, as we have little of them.
