The term "body positivity" is a misnomer

In theory, I love the idea of "body positivity". I don't think people should feel the need to look a certain way to be beautiful or to have self confidence. I think it's super important for people to appreciate their bodies and not be ashamed of how they look. I'd also love to live in a world where there are no beauty standards and everyone can be however big or small they want to be without fear of being judged, which is what "body positivity" is supposed to be about.

My problem with "body positivity" in practice is... well, that most of the people who are into it don't seem to actually be all that positive on their bodies. Like, a lot of them seem to be fixated on the fact that they're fat, and a lot of the time seem to use it as an excuse to lash out at people who happen to be thin as if they're personally responsible for their problems. That's not body positivity, that's just feeling bad about yourself and wanting to make other people feel bad about themselves too.

Like, I agree that fat shaming is a problem. But the solution to that isn't to shame thin people. And it's not body positivity to go around about your bodycounting all the ways in which you hate your body and feel inferior to others. "Body positivity" in practice too often seems to just be about hating your own body and wanting to make other people hate their bodies too, which is about as far from the mark as possible.

I think what "body positivity" as it actually is needs is a rebrand, because it's a bit of a misnomer. It's a bit like how people who claim we should all just let the planet burn because we already fucked it beyond saving call themselves "environmentalists". Like... you're not, you're the exact opposite.
