What will happen with climate change when we get AGI

I know that people generally hate talking about the future and like to say “you can’t know for sure” or “I don’t know what will happen, but I don’t like this for sure.” But I can’t help but be frustrated that everyone is talking about AGI, but no one is talking about the climate crisis. So let’s talk about the future.

“Man, I love our new AGI overlords, long may they reign, they fixed our climate in like an hour.” A long time ago, I would’ve said that humans would fix any problems we caused to the climate, but we all know that’s not true, at least that it’s not true *yet*. I’ve been reading arguments that humanity will fix the climate problems we've caused with AGI, and I can’t help but be skeptical. Just because “it’s a problem AGI could fix” doesn’t mean it will be. I cite the fact that *we could already solve climate change* but obviously we have not done so and continue to not do so.

I know that AGI is supposed to be uncontrollable, but if AGI is going to be as dependent on energy as it is predicted to be, I see no reason as to why AGI won’t at least mitigate the effects of climate change to continue to have power for itself. A better example might be how many animal species we’ve driven to extinction in pursuit of resources, but I think an even better example is nuclear bombs: we are capable of mass destruction, and we *have* used it, but that’s not preventing us from having nuclear bombs today.
