How would a two star system work?

So recently I have been learning about binary star systems, and some points that came up were:

* They are most commonly two G-type main sequence stars (like our sun)
* Further back, the two stars are about 10-100 AU from each other (our solar system is about 8 light minutes across)
* Closer stars are often where one star has engulfed the other
* Binary star systems can exist with more than 2 stars

I am trying to create a two star system for a fantasy book, and I want it to be realistic in that it’s supposed to be like our sun in that it’s a lone star in the middle of its own system, but for two stars.

So my question is, considering these things, how would two stars function together as one star system, where it’s not just one star engulfing the other? Would they rotate around a common center of mass? How would the planets around them rotate around both? What would be the effects on the planets? How would the stars rotate around each other?

Any help and resources would be great
