How do I stop thinking my husband is cheating on me?

I text my husband and ask him to pick up a bottle of wine from the liquor store to drink after dinner. I get a text back saying he is working late and will be home around 8.

I call him at 8 to tell him the roasted chicken is done and ready to eat. I text him a picture of the dish, and put it to the side to cool. I read a few chapters of my book, and around 9 I smell something that brings me to my attention. I go to the kitchen to check on the chicken I put to the side, and to my surprise, it is still cold. I check my phone and I have a voicemail from my husband that he is in a meeting with investors until 10. I check the door and lock is set and I can smell a skunk outside.

I finish my book and go to the bedroom around 11:00 and toss and turn thinking how my husband is probably cheating on me. I know it is an absurd thought, that I am married, physically attractive, a great cook, and that we have a great marriage. Despite all of that, the thought still gnaws at me. I hear the skunk meowing at the front door and get up to look through the peephole. I see a cat, not a skunk. How can a cat smell so bad? Maybe it isn't a cat, and is in fact a rat pretending to be a cat to get into my house?

The rat opens the door and walks in. It is my husband in a black suit. I ask him what is going on with the meeting. He tells me it was cancelled at 10 and he is sorry for the bad smell that he has on him. He went to a bar to drown his sorrows and sat next to a man in a fur coat. The coat smelled bad and the bartender told him that it was a skunk coat. My husband didn't know what to say and left the bar without finishing the beer.

I can tell that he is telling the truth, and I just need to drop it. But I can't. I know it is ridiculous, but my brain is just fixated on the idea that he was cheating on me. I know it isn't true, but I just can't stop thinking about it.

How do I get this out of my head?

\*\*\*

This was posted in a chamber for people to ask for advice, and there is no follow up or additional information in the post history. There is also no indication as to why the husband's coat would smell like a skunk.
