Mr. Kael stood at the front of his classroom of 15 students. He stood at just 5 feet tall, his pale hair falling to his shoulders like a waterfall. His eyes were like rubies and seemed to absorb light in the dimly lit room. He wore a black robe with gold trim and his sleeves were long and billowy. He wore no shoes, and his feet were covered by long black pants that reached to his ankles. He was a witch. The only one in existence.

“Today, we shall begin your first year at Witches Academy.” Mr. Kael announced to the students.

“Huh?” said a girl with blonde hair. “I thought this was magic school.”

“That is what we call it.” Said the teacher. “It is merely the name given by non magical folk.”

“Well I guess it works.” Said the boy sitting next to the girl.

Mr. Kael smiled, clearly pleased by the students banter. “I think I’ll go around the room. Introduce yourselves.” He said, a book in his hand.

“Yeah! Let’s start with you mister... teacher dude.” Said the boy.

Mr. Kael chuckled. “Of course. I am your teacher, and headmaster.” He said.

The class went around the room. There was Wendy the girl with blonde hair. Then there was Bobs. “I’m Bob, not Bobs. My mom calls me Bobs but that’s Bob with an S, not two Bs.” He said. Mr. Kael chuckled.

Next was Mary. “I’m the only girl with black hair.” She said. “My mom says it’s beautiful, and I guess I agree.”

There was Timmy. “I’m small for my age, but I can lift heavy things.” He said.

Next to Timmy was Jenny. “I can’t lift anything. I’m really weak.” She said. Mr. Kael frowned.

“My dad is really strong. He can lift cars and stuff.” Said a boy named Moe. Jenny smiled slightly.

Then there was Joe, Ed, Lee, Eve, Pete, Dee, and Zoe. When all the students introduced themselves, Mr. Kael began his lesson plan. The students sat in stunned silence as they learned they were witches. They had magic.

“You see, you are all born with a spark of magic within you.” Said Mr. Kael. “Your parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc all have to have magic for you to be born with it. If any of them are non magical, you are born non magical. You have no idea the rarity of your birth.”

The class looked at each other. Some looked sad. Some looked happy. Others looked like they didn’t give a fuck.

“What is our magic?” Asked Wendy.

Mr. Kael held up the book. “This here is the genetic registry.” He said. “It maps out your family tree, and states your magical abilities.”

The class watched as Mr. Kael opened random pages. On one page he pointed out a name. “Your great great great grandmother was a powerful witch named Millie.” He said. “Millie had children with a man named Fred. Their children were Bertha, Ben, Millie’s twin sisters Bonnie and Belinda, and Millie’s triplets Melvin, Marv, and Mark.” He said.

“And what were our abilities?” Asked Bob.

“Bertha was an elemental. Her powers were fire, water, earth, air, and aether.” Said Mr. Kael.

“That’s five elements!” Said Timmy.

“True, but her powers are a bit different.” Said the teacher. “Bertha could control the elements in small areas only.” He said.

“Oh.” Said Timmy. “So I could control a whole town?” He asked.

“Not quite.” Said Mr. Kael. “You’re small for your age and physically strong, remember?” He said.

“Righto.” Said Timmy.

Mr. Kael pointed out that Ben was an illusions master.

“What does that mean?” Asked Jenny.

“You can make anything look like anything else.” Said Mr. Kael.

“Cool!” Said Jenny.

Mr. Kael pointed out Millie and the Bonnie sisters as transformation specialists.

“Can I transform into anything I want?” Asked Moe.

“No.” Said the teacher. “You can only transform into a large animal, a large vehicle, or a building.”

“Can I transform into a house?” Asked Moe.

“Yes.” Said the teacher.

“Can I transform a car into a house?” Asked Moe again.

“No.” Replied the teacher.

“Oh.” Said Moe.

Mr. Kael pointed out that Belinda could transform into anything she wanted, but only once a day.

“Can I transform into a dragon tomorrow?” Asked Belinda.

“No.” Said the teacher.

Belinda looked sad, but said nothing.

Mr. Kael pointed out that Melvin, Marv, and Mark were all pyromancers.

“What does that mean?” Asked Joe and Ed in unison.

“You can make fire.” Said the teacher.

“Cool!” Said the Ed.

“I know, right!” Said Joe.

Mr. Kael pointed out that Eve had precognitive abilities.

“What?” Asked Eve.

“You know when things are going to happen before they actually do.” Said the teacher.

“Like what?” Asked Eve.

Mr. Kael held up the book. He pointed to the page. “Your great great great grandmother Millie had a precognitive dream. She dreamt that she was going on holiday in Australia, and she dreamt that she was on the beach. She dreamt that the sun was shining and she felt sand between her toes. In that dream, she saw a red-throated flyer passing her. A week later, your great great great grandmother went to Australia and everything she dreamed went exactly as she dreamt.”

“Whoof.” Said Eve. “I wish I could dream that.”

Mr. Kael smiled. “You can. And you do. But you don’t remember.” He said.

“Pfft!” Said Eve.

“Okay.” Said the teacher. “Next thing on the agenda.” He said.

“Yeah? What is?” Asked Wendy.

“The classroom is filled with large boxes. Open one up and see what’s inside.” Said Mr. Kael.

The class stared at the large boxes. “Why can’t we open them until now?” Asked Bob.

“Because you aren’t ready.” Said the teacher.

“Ready for what?” Asked Bobs.

“For your first lesson.” Said Mr. Kael.

“First lesson of what?” Asked Bobs again.

“Your first magical lesson.” Said the teacher.

The class stared at each box. They all opened them at the same time. Inside each box was a large wicker basket.

“Great. Fucking wicker baskets.” Said Zoe.

“What do we do with them?” Asked Jenny.

“Take them home, and use them.” Said the teacher.

“Why?” Asked Timmy.

“Because each basket is enchanted.” Said the teacher.

“What does the basket do?” Asked Mary.

“They can hold five times their weight.” Said Mr. Kael.

“Five times their weight?” Asked Dee.

The students stared at each other.

“Fuck me.” Said Zoe.

“Yeah.” Said Mary.

“You alright, Mary?” Asked Timmy.

Mary nodded. “Yeah. Sorry.”

“There’s no need to apologise.” Said Timmy.

“It’s okay.” Said Mary.

“What do you think our dads can lift?” Asked Bob.

“I think they can lift a car.” Said Timmy.

“No way.” Said Jenny.

“Why not?” Asked Timmy.

“I don’t know.” Said Jenny.

“Me neither.” Said Timmy.

The students stared at each other again.

“Okay. That’s all for today.” Said Mr. Kael.

“Can we go home now?” Asked Wendy.

“Of course.” Said the teacher.

The students cheered and clapped.

“I’m going to go ask my dad if he can lift a car.” Said Moe.

“I’m going to ask my dad if he can lift a house.” Said Zoe.

“Zoe! Your dad is a tailor!” Said Jenny.

“Yeah, but he’s still strong.” Said Zoe.

The students all stood up and grabbed their wicker baskets. The class cheered again as they walked out of the classroom.

“Can I ask you something, teacher?” Said Jenny.

“Of course.” Said Mr. Kael.

“Do you think you could teach my dad magic?” Asked Jenny.

“Why?” Asked the teacher.

“Because he’s not very strong.” Said Jenny.

“Can your father do any magic?” Asked the teacher.

“No.” Said Jenny.

“Then I’m afraid he cannot be taught.” Said the teacher.

The class stared at Jenny. She looked sad.

“Oh.” Said Jenny.

The class cheered again as they walked off down the hallway.

“See you all on Monday!” Said Mr. Kael.

“Later, teacher!” Cheered the class.

The teacher watched the students go. He smiled. He walked into his office. He picked up the phone. He dialled a number, waited for someone
