A professor at my university said something so racist towards me for no reason that I’m shaking as I write this.

I study law here in the UK. One of my professors is a Chinese woman, I’m black. We’ve had a good relationship so far this year. I’m quite an engaged student during lectures and I’ve always been respectful when conversing with her. There’s just generally been no issues.

As like the title says, she said something very racist towards me. I’ve been waiting for my grades this week and yesterday I finally received one from her. I ran through the feedback and was not happy about it at all. I was sure I wrote a better essay than that, the criticisms were pretty harsh and the grade was quite low. So I emailed her describing my issue and asked if I could meet her to discuss the grade. I was polite and courteous in the message.

She replied to me today and said she would see me 30 minutes. I go and for the first 20 minutes she was explaining why my arguments were weak. It was a bit frustrating because she was being condescending and cutting me off but I understood her point.

Then I politely brought up another point saying “I don’t see how that relates to the essay. I was saying that -”. Then she interrupted and said “listen I’m busy, calm down” and started talking over me again. I said “excuse me I’m sorry but that’s a bit disrespectful don’t you think?” And she said “the audacity, you people always complain about grades but can’t be bothered to learn”.

I was shocked. I didn’t say anything and then asked “what did you mean by ‘you people’?” And she said “you know black people always complain and have a poor attitude”. I said “excuse me that’s so racist” then got up and left. I’m honestly so hurt and upset I’m literally shaking as I type this. I have no idea how to go about this.
