My wife is bringing home a child from work. How do I (25M) break the news to her that we’re not ready for kids?

I wasn’t sure where else to turn for advice on this, so here I am.

My wife and I have been married for almost 2 years. We’re both in our mid-twenties, and we’re not ready to have kids yet. We’ve discussed it, and she’s not ready. We’re not even stable enough for pets.

However, my wife is a nurse in the PICU. Yesterday, she told me that she’s going to sign up for something called foster-to-adopt for a child she took care of.

From what she’s told me, a little girl (about 3?) has been admitted for about two months. She’s been severely abused and is traumatized. The mother was killed in a police shootout, and she has no known immediate family members.

My wife has bonded with the girl and wants to adopt her, and I suspect that she’s going to try and bring the girl home tonight.

I’m not ready to be a parent. I understand that my wife has bonded with the girl, but I don’t know if I’m ready to be a parent. We’re not ready for kids, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to adopt a traumatized child.

How do I break the news to her?
