The Y2K glitch where lots of older software couldn't handle the year 2000 was a major issue. Some experts thought the world was going to end. What if the world actually did end in 2000? What would the world be like now?

tl;dr: the Y2K bug makes all the nukes in the world go off. However they don't all go off at once. The effects the bug has on society is small at first, but a few nukes go off in random places regularly each year. This makes humanity think that aliens are attacking us. Eventually though the world gets so bad it all just collapses. Then in 2010 the truth comes out and the world unites for a brief time to make the doomsday device. Then the world collapses forever.
