AITA for giving my niece and nephew the same Christmas gifts that they gave me for my birthday?

Hello.
My brother and SIL are affluent, and their children are massive assholes. They go to a private school where their friends get new cars and Roosters and other “status symbol shit” for Christmas, so of course they feel like they need to keep up.

Each year they make a list of 20-30 expensive gifts that they want for Christmas, and then choose from that list when we ask them what they want. I think this is tacky, and I usually tell them to pick a gift under a certain dollar value so I can stay within budget.

My brother and SIL never mind, because they usually also buy their kids almost everything on their lists, or at least they did until this year. This year they decided to skew their holiday plans towards a long tropical vacation that starts on the 22nd and ends after New Years.

They said they wouldn’t have time to shop for the kids, so I asked them what they wanted me to get them. My brother asked me to get them something nice and said, “You make good money, don’t worry about it.” Which I thought was kind of a peach move, but whatever.

I asked the kids what they wanted, and they said to surprise them. I won’t list all the gifts I got them here, but I thought they were nice and within the budget I had for them.

Well their birthday is in the middle of January, so we usually celebrate by combining birthday/Christmas gifts for them, which they’ve always been fine with. This year my brother and SIL told me they were going to stay at their beachside resort for the holiday, but the kids would fly back so we could celebrate with them.

I asked my nephew and niece what they wanted for their birthdays, and they again said to surprise them.

I had extra PTO this year, so I decided to take the week of their birthday off and go camping. I told everyone my plans, and they seemed okay with it.

When the kids got back, I met them at my brother’s house to give them their gifts. My nephew got a basketball hoop, the kind you can put in your driveway. My niece got a play kitchen.

Well their faces fell when they opened their gifts, and they started pouting and making scowling faces. I asked my nephew if he liked his gift, since he had been asking for the hoop for about a year. He said, “Yeah, thanks.”

My niece was more outspoken, and she said, “This isn’t what I wanted.” I said, “You told me to surprise you.” And she said, “I thought you’d get me something good.” I asked her to tell me what she wanted, and she said, “I don’t know. Something better than this!”

Then I had an idea. I grabbed the gifts they had given me for my birthday, which I had in my car, and gave them to my niece and nephew.

They had given me a kitchen appliance and a big basket of assorted dry goods (like rice and beans and oats).

My niece started screaming and my nephew started pouting. My brother and SIL came into the room and asked what was happening, and I told them that the kids didn’t seem to like their gifts. That’s when my SIL noticed the kitchen appliance, and she said, “Oh, the instant pot? We returned that. It wasn’t big enough.”

So I asked her, “Why did you give me a gift you didn’t like?” And she said, “Well, we didn’t want it and thought you might use it.” So I said, “I didn’t want the kitchen or the hoop. Your kids might like them, but I thought you might use them.”

My SIL asked if I was being sarcastic, and I was like, “Kind of, but not really.”

My brother and SIL both said that I was being an asshole and that I should have returned their gifts and gotten them something else, since they didn’t like them.

So now I’m being ostracized by my brother and SIL for being an AH to their kids.
