The last ship from Earth has left. The last remnants of humanity have set off to find their new home in the stars; a home that they will never see in their lifetime. The last ship from Earth has left, and on Earth there is... nothing.

The once blue oceans lie still and quiet, dotted with the skeletal remains of oil rigs and sunken ships; the relentless blue stretching out in every direction, unbroken by the wakes of passing vessels. The tallest skyscrapers that once touched the heavens themselves now stand as shining monoliths to humanity’s greatest achievements, the greatest of which being abandoning the planet that had given it life before it was too late.

In the cities the streets are empty, the buildings standing as silent watchers to the world humanity had left behind. The traffic lights still tick over, even though there is no traffic to manage. The only cars are those that have been left, or abandoned in the streets. The only noise is the creaking of twisted metal and the groaning of buildings that have been left to ruin.

In the countryside, the rolling green hills and fields go unmanaged, left to grow wild now that there is no one to tend to them. No one remains to harvest the crops, or to tend to the livestock. The fields lie empty; the only livestock free to roam the countryside or left to starve in the pens which they cannot escape.

And yet even with all of this, the world appears... fine. Nature is already starting to reclaim the planet; to rid itself of the blight that had threatened to bring it to its knees. And perhaps, one day, it will appear as though humanity had never been here at all. But if that is the case, then what was the point of humanity’s brief, shining history? What was the point of any of it, when it has all been left behind?

What now?
