My mom tried to carry and they wouldn’t let her. So she went home and came back with a gun, and they let her. It’s what she’s always said.

Her story is about a cold winter night in ‘81, where she pulled through for her kids. Just like the mom in The Day After Tomorrow.

As a child, I was fascinated with that gun, because she let me look at it. It was my dad’s. She made sure they knew she had it too. She was a spacey woman, and I’m sure they knew she might actually use it.

I asked her if they let her in, because she had a gun? She said yes. What they wanted was for her to leave the gun before they’d let her in. She offered to. She said she’d leave the gun at their feet. They couldn’t leave, and she couldn’t go in. She says they wanted her to just leave, but she wouldn’t. At the time, I wasn’t clear what they were afraid of. After all, she was a mom just trying to have her kids. This woman was like my second mom. They saw how spacey she was. Maybe they’re the ones who’ll say she wasn’t always a mom. Maybe she asked to pet their dogs too many times. Maybe the gun was a threat. I don’t know. I remember my dad getting it.

I was about 10 months old. He bought it at a pawn shop for $80. $60 and their original price felt too high to him. He’ll tell you it was a deal. Just like the truck, and the boat. I was happy for him. I was happy to be a part of his happiness. He was a dad to me.

I don’t think my mom’s gun was a threat. I don’t think she was. You have to know her.
