The polar bear stood up slowly on his hind legs, looking around himself, not understanding what was happening. He was in a small cage, without seeing any of his species around him. In front of the cage, there were several scientists, all very excited and filming everything, probably to spread awareness of the sad state of the planet. The polar bear looked at the sign above the cage, which read "Ursus maritimus". He knew what that meant: the sea bear. He used to swim in the Arctic Ocean, and was very good at finding seals to hunt through the fog. But now, he found himself in a completely different place. He couldn't tell where the salt of the sea came from, but he could feel that this place was dry.

The scientists approached the cage and gave him some food, probably fish, since they were the polar bears' favourite food. The bear ate, and then closed his eyes, not wanting to see the strange people in front of him. They were probably going to kill him, just like they did with all the other polar bears.

After some time, the scientists opened a small container of liquid and put a few drops into the bear's eyes. The bear yelped in pain and opened his eyes again, feeling a burning sensation in his eyes. He looked at the scientists in front of him, and they all looked surprised.

"You can see!" exclaimed one of the older scientists.

The polar bear looked around himself, seeing everything very clearly for the first time in his whole life. The cage was small, but he could see everything in it. He could see the food, the water bottle and the two big stones in the corner. He looked at the scientists, and saw that they were all old. He estimated that they were at least 70 years old. That meant that they had grown up in a world where polar bears were a common sight. The bear could not believe that he was the last polar bear on Earth. How did all the other polar bears die? Did they all get caught in a trap? Or maybe something worse? The bear shuddered at the thought, not being able to do anything.

After the scientists left, the bear looked at the two big stones in the corner. He had never seen them before, but now that he could see very clearly, he realized that they looked like two grave stones. He approached them and read what was written on them:

Ursula
1995-2015

Oskar
2001-2025

The bear could not believe it. The two polar bears in the stones were his family members. They were his mother and father. How did they die? Why did nobody bury them? The bear looked around the cage again, and realized that there was nothing to do there. He had to do something to find out why his family members died. But where could he go? He was a polar bear, and he did not know how to walk on land. So, he waited until the next day, when the scientists came again, and then he did something he had never done before: he talked to them.
