You don't need to love your career. You just need to be able to tolerate it so you can fund your real life

One of the biggest consessions people make in life is to their career. Kids go to school and are told to focus all their efforts on getting a good job, other people work their ass off for years to get the best paying job they can.

But why?

We spend so much of our life working, it is absolutely rational to want to be happy and fulfilled doing it. But this is often a secondary consideration in our modern society. It is even a common view that you need to work hard to get a good job and then "do your time". After that, you can do what you really want.

If only life worked that way. You can't pay your bills with "do your time". If you choose a career that isn't very well paid, or even a free one, you need to be able to support yourself. Which is normally not possible, even for one person.

But still so many people hate their job. They sacrifice their after work time to organisation that doesn't even pay them enough to live a decent life. I am not talking about people working close to minimum wage. Maybe it is impossible not to hate it in that case.

But I am sure I could find something slightly better paid if I wanted it. I have chosen to have a job with a good work/life balance and adequate pay. It doesn't burn me out. I don't have to spend hours after work volunteering for something I don't believe in in order to not feel too guilty going home and relaxing.

I realise I am the minority here. Most people I talk to either expect to have gone to school for nothing, or volunteer for hours every week for no reason at all. I just can't understand it.
