You may not want to admit it. But it's the truth. Human historty, particularly in Europe, has been based on following leaders who determine who's to blame for our problems. In 1930's Germany, it was the Jews and other minorities.

If you grew up there during that time, you would have been taught by your teachers that the Jews were to blame. Your priests would have taught that the Jews were to blame. The politicians would have said the Jews were to blame, the newspapers would have said the Jews were to blame. Your friends would have said the Jews were to blame. Your family would have said the Jews were to blame.

You would've followed. You would've likely been convinced that the Jews were to blame. The root of the holocaust wasn't "the germans", it was humans.

If you were there, you would've been one of them. This is an unpopular opinion because no one wants to think they're capable of something as horrible as what the Nazis did. But it's the truth, if you were there, you would've been one of them.

Edit: for clarity, this is not absolving the Germans. They were in the wrong. But it's wrong to act as if it couldn't happen here, or anywhere else. Humans are all capable of it. Additional edit: this was also largely the premise of a documentary from the 90s? Where a guy went into a class in middle America and did the same thing the Nazis did, create a clique, create a us vs them mentality. It's extremely easy to convince people to discriminate against others, and it can happen anywhere. Its called the Third Wave.
