Why are there so many photographs from the 1910s and 1920s and very few from the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1900s?

Photography was invented in the early 1840s (1841 I think?) and by the late 1840s it had already started to become popular. Despite that, there are very few surviving photographs from the 1850s, 1860s, and 1870s. It's not until the late 1800s and early 1900s that photographs start to become more common, but it's not until the 1920s that it finally becomes mainstream.

Why do you think this is?
