CMV: Is it acceptable to tip baggers in grocery store who bag your groceries for you?

Last year we moved to USA and I have noticed many people tip the baggers in grocery store who bag your groceries and helped you to keep them in your car. It’s unacceptable if you have to tip someone for doing his job. I don’t know why grocery stores hire people and pay them for a job which is not necessary at all.
