The man in the freezer.

*Throwaway account as the only thing I do know about my stalker is my main reddit account.*

This is a convoluted story and it took place over many months. This may be too long or too boring for some so I will put the TLDR at the top:

TLDR: Be careful who is in your house.

I had just moved into a new house that was perfect for me. It had an in-law suite with a separate entrance and I could take in a tenant to offset my new mortgage. I moved in with my mom temporarily as my soon to be ex-husband and our daughters were staying in our old house.

After a few weeks I found a tenant. Some guy in his 30s with a blue collar job whose lease was up and needed a place right away. He seemed nice enough and was willing to pay a premium to move in right away without a lease, he would be month to month.

When I showed him around the in-law suite I noticed the freezer wasn't working. I called the repair guy for my main house who agreed to come out the next day to see what was going on. I stuck a note to the door with my phone number and told my tenant he didn't have to be there.

I got a call the next day from the repair guy. "There is a guy here who says he is your tenant but I'm not comfortable being here with him without you here." I said to go ahead and come to the house, I would be right there.

The repair guy was a young kid so I was thinking that my tenant was hitting on the repair guy and making him uncomfortable. I get to the house and it's a very awkward situation. My tenant was wearing nothing but boxers and was drinking a beer in the kitchen of the in-law suite. The repair guy had already diagnosed the freezer problem and said it was a simple fix but wanted me there because he had promised his dad he wouldn't work with anyone in the house without the owner there. I was embarrassed and said it was no problem at all and thanked him for being so careful. My tenant didn't even notice us until I said I was going to let the repair guy into the freezer.

My tenant then got all embarrassed, apologized and explained he was from a Nordic country and they all walked around their houses in their underwear when they are hot working outside and didn't realize he had to be fully dressed when he was in the house.

I kind of mostly believed him. I do live in a very hot place and he was doing yard work in the 115° heat we were having. But it was also raining and thunder storming so it wasn't that hot in the house at all. I wasn't comfortable at all that he was drinking but I tried to let it go.

The freezer was an easy fix, the tenant had managed to turn off the breaker for it without realizing it. The repair guy left and I asked my tenant if he needed anything before I left. He said he was good and if he thought of anything he would text me.

I went back to my mom's to watch TV with her and fell asleep on her couch. I woke up to a call from the police. "Is your name [my name]?" The police were at the house I was renting and my tenant said he didn't know the name of the owner but found my note on the door with my name and phone number.

"What's going on?" The officer asked me if I knew the names of my neighbors and if I had spoken to them at all, I hadn't so he said he would send an officer to my mom's house and I should ask my mom for directions to her house in case the GPS didn't work right.

Then he explained there was an issue at my house. My tenant had woken up some of the neighbors with his music and when they came to his door to ask him to keep it down he answered with no pants on. The neighbors left and called the police. The police showed up and he wouldn't answer the door. Of course his car was in the driveway across the street from the police so they knew he was home. The police were talking to other neighbors to see if anyone had a spare key.

The police at my mom's house came and explained the situation. Since the tenant was only month to month I told them to go in the house and get his stuff out, I didn't care, I just wanted him out and to not be my problem.

The police called me a little while later and said they were looking for my key. I realized I might have it at my old house so I drove there to look and it wasn't there. Then I got another call I didn't answer as I was driving and it went to voicemail. "We are looking for your key. It's not in the lockbox or the usual places under the welcome mat or a rock. Is it somewhere we wouldn't think to look?"

I called back and if they were going to get my tenant's stuff and tell him to leave I would rather do it in person. I get back to my house and my tenant is standing outside in a pair of jeans and no shirt talking to a lot of neighbors and police. He had decided to talk to the police and was now trying to make friends with everyone there.

I was mad he was talking to my neighbors so I went and talked to the police. "You don't have to get him out, I'm here now. I'll get him out." Then I went to my tenant, who was still talking to my neighbors and told him he had to get out. "But I just moved in, I don't know where to go." "Not my problem, you have to go now."

Then he went into the house with a cop behind him and got his 2 suitcases and left without saying anything else to me. As he walked away I asked the cop what the deal was with the key. He said they had finally found it. It was under the welcome mat. I said that's where I usually keep my keys but the tenant said he didn't know that. Then the cop elaborated that the key wasn't *under* the mat but *in* it. The key was cut open on one end and sewn into the welcome mat.

The next day the repair guy came back to get his tools, he had forgotten them when he came for the freezer. He was surprised I had already kicked out the tenant. "You kicked out the creepiest guy I've met? Why?" So I told him the story and he had a shocked look on his face. "No, he was creepy as hell. I'm glad you kicked him out."

Over the next few weeks I learned how creepy he was. 1) The freezer wasn't broken. As soon as the repair guy left he turned the breaker back off. 2) He managed to break into my main house. Wether by the key or another way I don't know but he was sleeping on my couch. 3) He was hiding in my closets. Neighbors saw him leaving through a window in the middle of the night.

I ended up changing all my locks and getting an alarm system for both parts of the house. I moved in and spent the first week calling the alarm company over and over again. Finally I figured out that all the doors and windows were tamper sensors. If someone was in the house and a window or door opened the alarm would go off even if the window or door was opened with a key. Meaning my former tenant couldn't get in anymore and stop the alarm by punching in the code.

THE UPDATE:

I didn't think this would get any traction but wow! Thank you for the awards. Some have asked for an update so here it is:

I have a new tenant and everything seems fine. I never heard from or saw my old tenant again. My new tenant seems nice enough, he keeps the house spotless and I don't even have to paint after he leaves. All the neighbors are super nice and we all have each other's phone numbers now so if anything seems off we all call the police right away. I was able to get my money back from the old tenant and the police did look into him but nothing ever came from it. They do have his ID and everything so if he does anything in the future they will know where he lived in the past.

Thank you all again!
