If your kid wants to play video games instead of do their school assignment, you're failing as a parent.

This went against everything I believed as a kid. My dad would always tell me to go do my schoolwork instead of playing video games but I'd refuse. I'd even try to start something, like doing it for an hour, and then claiming I've enough time to do it later and playing video games instead.

I got into a pretty big argument with my dad about this because he told me the consequences of failing were my fault, not his. At first I thought it was bullshit and that it's not his job to feed me and provide for me whether or not I graduate, whatever the case may be.

Now I play video games while he's at work and do schoolwork when he gets home and finishes his shift. He's really proud of me (9.96 GPA) and always tells me it was the right decision to do schoolwork when I was young. He told me if I came out of the workforce and had a 9.5+ GPA, he'd give me $1800 a month for school until I got my degree whatever it was that I wanted. That money isn't included in my college scholarship, which is $3000.

I'm an intel officer in the Army and going into neuropsychology. My dad told me I can pursue any degree I want and he'll afford me whatever life needs.

Had Iobeyed him as a kid, who knows where my life would be. Probably a middle class citizen making $40k doing shit I hate.

I wouldn't wish this fate on my worst enemy. Don't give your kids a death sentence. They can thrive in life if you take the right approach.
