AITA for "making fun" of my niece after she lost her 2 front teeth?

I am having a hard time on this one. I am usually a Reddit lurker, but I need to talk to somebody about this it's been really eating at me and my wife says I am the AH. Christmas 2019 ( it seems years ago now) we went to my SIL's house where my (17 year old) son, (11 year old) daughter, (8 year old) daughter and (6 year old) niece would be. We were the first to arrive so my daughters were playing with my niece and my son was playing video games. About 2 hours later my SIL's brother showed up with his (15 year old) daughter and (8 year old) daughter. From the moment they walked in his older daughter started making fun of my niece. She would pull her chair into the hallway, close the door and just started calling her names "booger face" , "shitty pants" "booger brittany" I don't know why but it stuck with me. For the rest of the night she was shitty pants or booger face. Fast forward to the day after Thanksgiving. We are back at the same SIL's house for a family dinner. My niece still insists on calling me uncle Shitty Pants. I was cool with it. A few weeks later she loses her two front teeth. My SIL posts pictures of the tooth fairy on Facebook. That night she calls me to ask if we can pick up her kids because she was having a wine night with friends and the kids are driving her crazy. She offered beer and football, I accepted but told her one condition: Her kids call me uncle "Punchy Face" . She laughed and agreed. I go over and my SIL shows me the pictures of the tooth fairy that had been there the night before. I get the kids and we head home. A few weeks goes by and she is still calling me uncle "Punchy Face" so I think it's over. Christmas Eve 2020 rolls around. My niece is off of calling me uncle "Punchy Face" . She calls me to remind me to bring beer and not to bring my friends. I tell here I haven't seen them since the lockdown started. We get there and my (17 year old) son, (11 year old) daughter, (8 year old) daughter, (6 year old) niece, and (8 year old) cousin are there. We are all having a great time. At one point my niece, cousin, and daughters start calling my son "Blonde Daryl". I don't really get why but I didn't care. He wasn't bothered. He said it was a reference from the walking dead. They were running around calling him Blonde Daryl and he was pretending to be the walking dead trying to get them when my niece walked out of the kitchen without her teeth in and said "Look at me I'm the vampire from the Walking Dead" . I just laughed and said "great now we have Booger Face the vampire" and the kids all just giggled. Silence. My SIL shot me a glare but I couldn't figure out why. My MIL comes over to me and asks if I could take her home. I said sure but I thought we were staying for dinner? She just stared at me and said "you're not staying anymore" . I tried to apologize to my SIL but she stormed off into the bedroom. I tried to talk to her and she called me an AH and said I make fun of the kids. I tried to say that I was just joking around and the kids were doing it first. She said I am an adult and shouldn't be making fun of the kids. I asked my niece later and she said that she was just joking and would have expected me to play along . My wife says that I am the AH for making fun of her and I said she was making fun of me first and I was just joking back. My wife says I am the AH for making fun of the kids. I said she was making fun of me first and I was just joking back. I am confused. Did I overstep here?
