Everyone who applied for a job at my office is unqualified

I’m in a managerial position at a large company and it’s truly shocking how many of the people who apply for jobs at my company are wildly unqualified for the positions they apply for. It’s like they think “oh, I’m good with people, so the manager position would be a good fit”. Newsflash: no it isn’t.

I’ve seen people apply to engineering and IT positions with degrees in fine art, English, theatre, psychology, and other unrelated fields WITH NO RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE. Like wtf? How do you think you are qualified to do this job lmao.

I’ve seen people apply for positions that require experience in a programming language with no experience in that language, and sometimes with no experience coding at all. If you don’t know the language, the answer is to spend a weekend learning it. I don’t want to hear about how you’re a “quick learner”. That means jack shit.

I’ve seen people apply for research positions with zero research experience. Like the only thing you did in school was your personal classwork and group projects. You never assisted an advisor with a research project or anything. That’s not a research background lol.

If you’re applying for a job requiring a degree in a specific field (like engineering or IT or medical professions or most sciences or many professionalLicenced fields), and you do not have that degree, why are you applying for this job? Don’t you realize you’re wasting everyone’s time? Do you think we don’t look at your educational background? Do you think we don’t care about relevant experience? Do you think we make our job postings the way we do for fun, or do you think there’s a reason why we specify these requirements?

Did your parents not push you to get relevant work experience, or push you to get an internship? Do you think your 8th grade science project and high school vocation floristry class give you experience?

I don’t want to sound like a “get off my lawn” kind of person, but this is truly obnoxious as hell. I get 5 applications a day for positions that require very specific schooling and experience, from people who do not have that experience. I get 20 applications a day for entry level positions from people with degrees in things that have nothing to do with the job.

If you apply for a job and don’t meet 90%+ of the listed requirements, you will not get an interview. If you apply for a job requiring a degree in a certain field and you don’t have that degree, sniff around for a different job because you’re not getting hired here no matter how hard you “work”.
