Healthcare is not a right. This is one of those common sense things that gets lost on a lot of people.

You have the right to travel freely. You have the right to vote. You have the right to free speech. You have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are inherent. They are inalienable. Nobody has to give them to you. Nobody has to provide them for you. They do not have to be taken from others to be given to you.

You do not have the right to shelter, food, or clothes. You DO have the right to pursue these things, but you don’t actually have the right to them. The same should be true for healthcare.

Nobody has to provide you with food and water, just because you need it to live. Nobody has to give you shelter. You do not have the right to these things.

Healthcare is not different. Nobody owes you healthcare.

I don’t care how you get your healthcare. You can buy it yourself, your company can buy it for you, or the government can buy it for you, but YOU have to pay for it. You don’t have the right to it. Healthcare has to be paid for. Someone, or some people, or some entity has to pay for it.

You do have the right to pursue healthcare. You have the right to seek it out. You have the right to ask someone to give it to you, or to give you money to buy it, but you do not have a right to healthcare, and you do not have a right to have someone else pay for your healthcare.

You have the right to go and ask someone for food, or to go apply for a job to get money so that you can buy food, but you don’t have a right to food. You don’t have the right to go into WalMart and just take food because you’re hungry. You don’t have the right to go take money from someone else because you need to buy food. No, you need to go earn your own money and buy your own food, or you need to go ask someone for food.

If someone pointed a gun to my head and asked me “Would you rather pay taxes to fund universal healthcare, or have universal healthcare funded by deducting money from your paycheck every month,” I would choose to pay taxes. 100 times out of 100.

But I don’t have the right to healthcare, and neither do you. You don’t have the right to make others give you things just because you need them. You need food to live. You need water to live. You need clothes and shelter to live. You need healthcare to live.

Doesn’t matter. You don’t have the right to these things. You have the right to pursue these things. You have the right to ask for them, but you don’t have the right to take them. You don’t have the right to make other people give them to you. That’s not a right, that’s communism.

So if you want healthcare, go seek it out. Go earn money and buy it. If you cannot afford it, go ask someone for help. Go apply for a job. Go apply for government assistance.

But you do not have the right to healthcare. If you think you do, you are wrong.

Edit: I would like to clarify that I do not believe that people should be allowed to die in the streets. I do believe that the right to life is an inherent right, but I also believe that the right to life ends when you actually die. Once you are dead, your right to life is gone.

I don’t think that people should be allowed to die. I don’t think that people *do* have to die without healthcare. I do think that healthcare should be provided to people. I do not think that healthcare is a right, any more than food is a right, or a house is a right, or a job is a right.

I think that people should have access to healthcare. I think that people should have a right to pursue healthcare. I don’t think that they have the right to healthcare. It is not an inherent right. There is a difference here, and if you cannot see that difference, then you need to try harder.
