CMV: The common "I can't believe 20 years have flown by..." sentiment is overblown and early 2000's and 2020's are no more or less different then 1960 and 1980.

You hear this sentiment a lot, but I tend to disagree: "I can't believe how fast the last 20 years have flown by, it feels like just yesterday when I was in high school and now I have kids and feel like an old man." Now I obviously agree that time tends to fly by more the older you get, but I think that's a mental bias and does not mean that the past 20 years have been any shorter then other 20 years.

I was having this conversation with a 40 year old and he was going on about how the past 20 years just flew by. I was 5 in the year 2000 and he was 25, so the 1960 to 1980 period was the same age difference. This means in 1960 he was 5 and in 1980 he was 25. Now if you use your brain a little bit you should be able to agree that the differences between early 2000's and now are not as drastic as between 1960 and 1980.

To give some examples of the differences that exist between 1960 and 1980, some of the notable ones include: widespread proliferation of air conditioning, significant improvement in health care, huge decrease in crime, Suzane B Anthony's becoming the first woman on american currency, the early internet coming out, first mobile phones, and many more. Now I know some of you are thinking "Yes, but what about the huge advancements in technology over the last 20 years???". To this I have two responses: first, while it is true that there has been a lot of technological advancement in the last 20 years (and I will list those below), it does not seem to be comparable to the huge societal differences between 1960 and 1980. Second, it seems like with all these advancements we have only created a life of personal isolation where everyone spends most of their day staring at a screen, and I'm not sure that is necessarily a good thing.

Some of the major technological advancements of the past 20 years include: social media, smartphones, google voice to text, Alexa or other home assistants, widespread and easy access to video streaming, and many more. While these have certainly changed our lives they don't seem to have changed our society in the same way that it changed between 1960 and 1980. Let me know what you think and if you can change my view on this.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who commented and gave their thoughts!
