Anime is definitely not the greatest thing since pizza, it's not the most perfect art form that's leagues ahead of all other forms of animation. It sure as hell has a lot of critics and detractors, and a lot of them dislike it because it's fucking terrible. It just has a dedicated fan base. I'm not some dumb fucking retard who thinks that whatever is always better than everything else. I can admit that there are plenty of shitty anime out there and plenty of great animation from other places.

With that said, here are some animated shows/movies that are better than most anime:

* Zootopia (2016) - This movie is a solid 10/10. Nothing beats it in terms of sheer storytelling quality. The story is so tight and well paced, and the movie knows what it wants to say and is brave enough to say it. It's not some wishy washy shit that toes the line because it's afraid of being called out for being brave and taking a stand. It's so clever and witty, it's full of lovable characters, and the writing is top-notch. The movie is a really good social commentary and it actually knows what it's talking about. It's not like some anime where it just name drops a bunch of terms it heard and uses them out of context like a dumb pseudointellectual. Also, it's an animated movie that's made for everyone, not just kids or just adults. Like, the movie equally appeals to both children and grown-ups, and it's not some "anime for adults" that's really just an overglorified cartoon for manchildren who refuse to grow up.

* Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) - This show is a 10/10 as well. It's a better animated show than 90% of anime, and only ignorant fucks would dispute that. It has memorable and well-developed characters, a gripping storyline and great world building. The show tackles topics like genocide, imperialism, slavery, and dictatorial regimes. It actually features a lot of representation of real life cultures like the Inuit, Tibetans, Chinese, Koreans, and the vultures are based on Central Asians. And all the cultures depicted in the show are depicted in a realistic manner that's actually respectful and pays homage to the real life cultures they're based on. The main characters are developed very well over the course of the show, and it has one of the greatest antagonists in all of animation. It also has great music, with the best opening theme and one of the greatest soundtracks in all of animation. Also, the show knows how to balance humor and drama, which is something that a lot of anime can't do.

* Shrek 2 (2004) - This movie is very lighthearted and fun, and unlike some anime, it's not some self-serious borefest that tries too hard to be deep and fails at it. It also does what a lot of anime can't do, balance humor and drama very well. The characters are all lovable, and it doesn't have any cringe OCs like some anime do. Also, the music is great.

* Dune (2021) - This movie is a visual feast with amazing visuals, and it doesn't have that cheap looking 3D computer-generated shit that a lot of anime uses. It's a great example of how a big budget can do wonders for an animated movie. Also, the movie actually knows what it's talking about, unlike some pseudointellectual anime that just name drops terms it doesn't understand.

* Venture Brothers (2003) - This show is one of the greatest adult animation out there, leagues ahead and superior to anything Japan has to offer in terms of adult animation. It doesn't have that pseudo-intellectual bullshit, it's not some over-the-top gore fest, nor is it some dumb fucking harem anime aimed at 40-year-old virgins. It also has great characters and a great storyline.

* South Park (1997) - This is one of the greatest adult cartoons of all time. It's definitely leagues ahead of whatever the hell Japan can offer when it comes to adult animation. Also, unlike anime, it actually knows how to be funny and can do humor without being cringe or relying on cheap tactics.

* The Boys (2019) - This is one of the greatest animated shows of all time, and it's definitely leagues ahead of any anime aimed at an older audience. Unlike anime, it doesn't attack strawmen, and it has great storytelling and lovable characters. It's also really good at social commentary, and it's not afraid to actually say something. Also, it's not like some edgy anime that tries too hard to be "mature." It's very well made and well thought out, and it's actually about something unlike some anime.

* Rick and Morty (2013) - This is one of the greatest adult cartoons of all time. It's way better than most anime, and unlike a lot of "anime for adults," it's actually aimed at adults and not manchildren who can't grow up.

* Bojack Horseman (2014) - This is a great animated show that's definitely better than most anime. It's a really well written show that's not afraid to tackle real issues like mental health, it's not some anime that toe's the line because it's afraid of being called out for being brave. Also, it doesn't have some fucking dumb pseudointellectual bullshit like a lot of anime do.

* Batman: The Animated Series (1992) - This show is one of the greatest animated shows of all time, and it's way better than 90% of anime. Also, it's definitely better than any Marvel animated show. It actually knows how to write superheroes, and unlike some anime, it doesn't have any cringe OCs.

* The Dragon Prince (2018) - This show is a great animated show that's really well written, and it's definitely better than a lot of anime. It actually knows how to write characters, and the storyline is great.

* Beastars (2019) - I know this is actually an anime, and it's leagues ahead of most anime. It's a really well written show with great characters and a great storyline, and it's a great social commentary. It's not like some shit like Goblin Slayer or 100 that uses terms it doesn't understand and uses strawmen to make a point.

* The Simpsons (1989) - This is one of the greatest animated shows of all time, and it's definitely leagues ahead of most anime. It's a great satirical show that knows how to make fun of current events, and it's been running for decades. It's also a lot more timeless than anime is, it will be around for generations to come and it always has something to say. Like, The Simpsons doesn't have that "anime time" thing where 1 minute in real life is 5 minutes in anime time. It's been running for decades, and its runtime is actually decades long, not some fake decades-long runtime that's actually only a few years.

* Gravity Falls (2012) - This show is a really well-written show that's leagues ahead of most anime. The story is really unique, and it's not like some generic isekai or shit like that. It's also really good at humor, and it knows how to balance that with the drama. Also, it has great characters and character development, which is something that a lot of anime lacks.

* My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (2010) - This show is leagues ahead of most anime and it actually has a story. Also, it features great character development that's actually realistic and not some anime development that's rushed and unrealistic.

* Super Robot Wars: OG: The Inspector (2010) - I know this is actually an anime, but it's leagues ahead of most mecha anime and most anime in general. It's a really well-written show, and it's not a generic isekai or mecha anime. It's something really special, and it's a great watch if you want to watch something good.

* Young Justice (2010) - This is a great animated show that's actually leaps and bounds ahead of most superhero anime, and it's way better than any Marvel animated show. It features a lot of representation of real life cultures and it's actually respectful towards them, unlike some anime. Also, it's a really well-written show, and it's not that generic "superheroes save the world" shit that Marvel has been churning out.

* Dragonball (1986) - I know this is actually an anime, but it's leagues ahead of most modern day anime and modern day superhero shows. It has a lot of representation of real life cultures and it actually puts effort into that representation, unlike some anime who's like "let's make some anime girls with darker tints and call them black and hispanic and make them all African and Hispanic stereotypes and call them Latinx." Also, it's a really well-written show with some of the greatest characters in all of animation, and it's not like modern day Marvel where it's some generic "superheroes save the world" shit. Like, Dragonball is a really special animated show.

* Dragonball Z (1989) - Again, I know this is actually an anime, and it's leagues ahead of most modern day anime and modern day superhero shows. It has some of the greatest fights and orchestrations in all of animation, and the story is really well written and engaging. The animation is not that cheap looking 3D computer-generated shit that a lot of anime uses, it's traditional animation that's actually timeless and looks good even today. Also, it's a really diverse show that has great representation of real life cultures and it
