My dad told me to stop smelling his things as a child, I don’t understand why

So my dad told me to stop smelling him in public as a child, why tho I’m not sure, I still do this and I told my daughter to stop because my dad said so. I’m wondering if this is a glitch. And if so, how would she even explain that to anyone.
