Why does anybody use Twitter?

Just watched the new video of idubbbz talking about how Twitter is going back to a chronological timeline and how it should appease both sides of the algorithmic timeline debate. But when I clicked on his tweet I had to actually click on the little clock icon for me to see his tweet, and his tweet only showed up because I followed his account. The algorithm is still there, but it’s only a button to get rid of it now.

Why would I want to use an algorithm to show me what a bunch of people that I’m following have posted when I can just look at my list of who I’m following and individually check each profile if I have the time or energy to do so. There are some people who I follow who only post once a month, and some who post ten things a day. Why would I want Twitter to show me a bunch of posts from someone who posts ten things a day but only show me a couple of posts from someone who doesn’t post all that much? I don’t want Twitter to make decisions for me, but for some reason a lot of people seem to like this algorithmic way of viewing social media.

Furthermore, what’s the point in following someone if you want to see what a Twitter algorithm shows you? It makes following people completely irrelevant. So many times Twitter will show me tweets from people that I don’t even follow. There’s no point in even having followers or following people if Twitter is just going to show you tweets from a mix of people you follow and people you don’t follow.

I also don’t get Twitter’s concept of going viral. If Twitter is supposed to be a social media account, then I want to see what’s going on with the people in my “Twitter circle.” I don’t give a fuck about what’s going on in the Twitter circle of people I don’t know. So why should I care if a viral tweet was posted by someone I don’t follow? If I’m watching a show and I see a guest star or a side character, I don’t really care about how many TV shows they’ve been in. I’m watching this TV show because I am interested in what’s happening in the story of this TV show. I don’t care if some random actor from this show also appeared in a bunch of movies or other TV shows. So if I’m looking at Twitter, why should I care if some tweet from someone I don’t follow is trending?

The only reason I have a Twitter account is because some people put out information on Twitter exclusively. For example, I follow Jim Carrey on Twitter because he regularly posts new artwork that he does. But sometimes he’ll post works of art or political comments on Instagram exclusively. So if I don’t have an Instagram, I won’t see his Instagram exclusive posts. There’s some people who only post their shit on Twitter, some people only post on Instagram, some people post their shit across multiple social media platforms. That’s why I have accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and tik tok. But I don’t really use Twitter at all except to look at what certain people have posted on their Twitter profile. I don’t use Twitter the way that most people use it. I don’t scroll through Twitter to see what’s trending or what Twitter thinks I should be looking at. The only reason I log into my Twitter account is to look at the profile of a particular person. And I only do this when I want to see what they’ve posted recently and I don’t have time to check their Instagram or any other social media accounts that they may have.

So idubbbz was basically wrong in that tweet. Twitter doesn’t have a button to get rid of the algorithm. It’s still what Twitter centers their platform on. The algorithmic timeline still exists on Twitter, and if you want to see the chronological timeline, you have to hit a button to see it. Which sounds like what Instagram has right now from what I’ve been told. I don’t use Instagram that much, but I’ve been told that Instagram still has an algorithmic timeline, but they also have a button to see a chronological timeline. So the algorithmic timeline is still the default way of looking at social media on Twitter and Instagram.
