Hello, I'm a 26 year old woman, I own a few guns and I'm a fairly good shot. I own a 12ga, 9mm, 38, 45, and a 308. I'm also currently training to get my CCP. For me, owning a gun was something I was brought up with by my family.

I work a lot of hours and to save money, I moved into an apartment where 3 of the 4 rooms are rented out to tenants. I rent the largest room, I have my own bathroom and a tiny entrance and walk in closet. I have a 5 yr old male Pomeranian and a 3 yr old female Pomeranian. I've had them since they were puppies.

My point in mentioning this is that: I have 2 dogs, I can't see into the rest of the apartment from my room, I can't hear any movement from my room because of the way the place was set up (and because I'm slightly hard of hearing in both ears) and because of this and other reasons, I keep my 45 next to my bed. I keep it in the mag with no round chambered for safety.

A few nights ago, I woke up to a man standing in my room. I was groggy - I'm a light sleeper but I'm also very groggy when I wake up. I don't remember if my dogs were barking or not, I don't even remember seeing them. All I remember was someone saying "don't move". Now, I've never been held up at gunpoint or knife point or anything like that before, but people who know me know I'm not the type to freeze up in an emergency. I've seen a gun at close range but never pointed at me in a threatening manner. So, I acted on instinct. I reached over to my nightstand, and I started shaking as I cocked and aimed my gun. I still don't know how I did it so quickly, I can barely remember anything about the whole incident (like I said, I was very groggy, we've all been there).

I drew my gun and the guy run out the door. I didn't shoot. I didn't even think it was right to shoot. I didn't shoot because I was protecting myself, but because I didn't want to hurt anyone else. There was no need to shoot him. He didn't seem threatening - he was just there. I didn't hear a shot or anything. The police didn't find anyone when they came. They said my roommates were all in their rooms at the time, so I don't know what happened. But I woke up to a man in my room, without my dogs barking, and having my gun next to me might have saved my life. I know a lot of people think guns are bad and that we should get rid of them, but I feel like this is an example of a gun being used in a good situation. I thank my gun every day for saving my life, but we all know how much people hate guns. So, just thought I'd share my story. Thank you for reading.
