Wrong place wrong time?

So, I was out in the shop cutting up some steel. I hear a knock at the door. Walked up, and there are two sheriff's deputies at my door. He asks if I've seen anything unusual, and I ask what's going on. He explains there was a shooting in our neighborhood two houses down (I've seen the house, he has a giant American flag painted on the side) and the perps fled. Now they are searching the neighborhood and surrounding houses. I tell him to come on down, but what ever you do, don't shoot my dogs.

He brings a 3rd deputy after a few minutes and they search my house and out buildings. I show them my collection and they seem a little surprised, but polite.

This was about noon, and I get another knock at the door about 2. This time it's a K9 unit and another deputy. The cop on the dog tells me they received a tip that the suspects were hiding in my attic. I allow them in the house, and give them the two sets of keys for the attic. The cops come in and begin clearing the house. Everything is cool, no one draws down on me or anything. I show them all my guns, and they are polite about the whole thing. But they clear every room before they let me back in without holding me at gun point.

The whole time the cops are searching my house I'm out in the shop with the other two. We are talking about hunting, and I show them my latest hunting bow, 100# at 29" draw. They are polite, and the one cop seems really interested.

I guess the whole point of this post is I'm not sure if I did the right thing. I have an inherent distrust of police. I would be really pissed off if I were a felon and the cops found my stash while searching for a completely unrelated event, but it sure seemed like the right thing to do at the time.
