How did that drug take over our consciousness so rapidly?

xThis drug, commonly referred to as OIV, Opiates, Heroin, Fentanyl, and Opioids has taken over the world consciousness so rapidly. I mean there is alot of drugs, and for the first time in human history we have such a drug that has literally killed hundreds of thousands of people and is getting worse each year. I know the majority of this deaths are from Fentanyl but still. Never seen anything like it.
