My friend recently got a new phone number, and the other day I texted her to see how her day had gone. I got a response back, but it wasn't from her.

"Hello?"

"Who is this?" I texted back, confused.

"I'm not sure who you are," the other person responded, "but my son was using this number. I'm not sure who he texted before, but the messages didn't delete so I'm sorry if this is weird. My name is Janice, and I'm his mom."

"Don't worry about it at all," I replied. "My name is Laura. Definitely not your son though"

"Haha okay good. I seriously have no clue who your son is," Janice replied.

I laughed and said, "Well I guess not then. Seriously though, he's a friend of mine. Definitely not my son"

"Haha okay. I'll let you go, but please say hi to my son for me?"

"Okay, sure thing," I replied.

---

I didn't have to wait long to deliver her message. I don't like to talk about my friend here, but I want to paint a picture of what he's like.

First things first, he's incredibly sweet and kind. But he's not all there, if you know what I mean. He's always been a bit off.

He says and does things that he finds funny, but are actually really creepy. He once told me that he likes to listen to people when they think they're alone, and that he's heard a lot of interesting things that he'll "never tell."

One time, while we were hanging out at my place, I left to go get us something to eat, and when I got back he had broken in to the apartment next door and was going through the tenant's belongings. He had the nerve to say it was "for my own good" that he was doing it.

Needless to say, my neighbors and I don't get along now.

But despite all the weird things he's done, I don't think he's malicious. He's just...off. And he's been a friend of mine for almost as long as I can remember, so I can't just ignore him.

So, when he texted me asking what I was up to, I told him about talking to Janice.

He laughed and asked if I was flirting with her, and I said no, but that I had to give her a message.

"Why?" he asked, confused.

"I have to tell her son something," I replied.

"Oh," he said. "Okay, I'll tell him for you if you want."

"Why would you tell him for me?"

"Because...I'm her son," he replied.

"And you're texting me?"

"Yeah! Because...I'm her son!"

I was getting a little frustrated at this point, so I just told him I'd see him at our usual hangout spot later.

"Are you giving mom the message?" he asked.

"Yes," I said. "I'll give her the message."

"Okay sounds good. See you soon."

I set my phone down and almost forgot about the conversation until he showed up at the restaurant.

When he sat down across from me, I remembered the message from Janice. "Hey, don't forget. I have to give your mom a message."

"Oh yeah," he said. "I forgot! What is it?"

"Tell her hi or something," I said.

"Okay, thanks."

---

I completely forgot about Janice and her son until she texted me again a few days later.

"Hi Laura! How has your day been?"

"It's going pretty well," I replied. "Yours?"

"It's been good. My son got in a pretty bad accident, but he's okay. Just some cuts and scrapes."

"Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that," I said. "I'm glad he's doing okay though."

"Yes, definitely. I was just about to text him and check in, but I wanted to say hi first."

"Okay," I said. "I'm glad you texted first!"

I didn't hear from her again until later that night.

"Hey Laura! Sorry I didn't text you back earlier. Something really weird happened! My son called me and said that he wasn't in an accident, and that he's fine. But the guy at the hospital said that he died! He was so confused, and he said that he can't get out of the hospital. What the hell do I do?"

I was so confused. I didn't know what to say. "Umm...I'm really sorry. But this is just to let you know, I don't think your son is using this number anymore. That's why I was texting in the first place."

"Oh. Oh wow, I'm so sorry. Who is your friend then?"

"My friend has your son's number now," I replied stupidly.

"Oh. Well then, do you think you could give him a message for me?"

"Of course," I said. "What is it?"

"Please tell my son that I'm looking for him, and I really miss him. And if he finds a way out of the hospital, tell him to please call his mom."

"Okay," I said. "I'll definitely do that."

"Thanks Laura. Have a good night. Hopefully we can catch up tomorrow."

"You too," I said. "Good night Janice, and good luck finding your son."

"Thanks so much Laura. Good night!"

We hung up, and I decided to text her son again.

"Hey man, your mom wanted to talk to me again."

"Okay, what were you doing on my phone?" he asked.

"Why do you keep saying your phone?" I asked, starting to get frustrated with him.

"It's my phone," he said.

"But you're using a different number now, right?"

"No," he said. "This is my number."

"Well, it's not now, because you gave it to me."

"I didn't give it to you," he said.

"Yes, you did," I replied.

"I didn't!" He said.

I was so sick of this stupid back and forth, so I just said, "Whatever. Your mom wanted me to give you a message."

"Oh, okay sorry. What was it?"

"She's looking for you," I said.

"Why?"

"I don't know," I said. "She says you were in an accident or something, and she can't find you."

"That's weird," he said. "I'm not in an accident"

"I know," I replied. "I just thought she wanted you to know that."

"Okay, thanks."

"You're welcome," I said.

"Was that it?"

"Yes," I said. "That was it. I'm going to go to bed now, so have a good night."

"You too," he said. "Good night!"

I hung up, and went to bed.

I got a text the next morning from him again, asking how I was doing. I told him I was doing well, and then I had an idea.

"Hey, you wouldn't happen to know Janice would you?"

"No, why?"

"Because she keeps texting me and saying that you're her son!"

"That's weird," he said. "But I don't know anyone named Janice."

"Well, I think you might want to get in touch with her," I said. "She seems pretty worried about her son."

"Okay thanks," he said. "I don't know her though, and definitely not her son."

"Okay," I said. "Well, have a good day."

"Okay, you too," he replied.

I hung up, and went back to work.

---

I didn't hear from Janice or her son again until later that night. This time, it was from Janice.

"Hey Laura, sorry again to bother you. I just wanted to check in and see how you're doing."

"I'm doing fine, thanks," I replied. "How's your son?"

"Oh, I still haven't found him," she said. "But I have to tell you, something really weird happened."

"What?" I asked.

"Well, I went to the police and told them that my son was missing, and they said that they hadn't seen him. But then, right as I was leaving, an officer came up to me and asked if I had lost a boy around 25 years old."

"Yeah, that's him," I said.

"Well, the cop told me that if I was looking for him, I should try looking for him outside. I was confused, and he just told me 'look outside.'"

"That sounds incredibly cryptic," I said.

"Tell me about it," Janice replied. "But I went outside and looked around, and I didn't see my son. But I did find a note. And you won't believe what it said."

"What did it say?"

"I'm not going to text it to you, because that's just too weird. But I'm going to read it to you. Are you ready?"

"Yeah, I'm ready. Go ahead and read it."

"Okay. It said 'Look in the closet.'"

"That does sound pretty weird," I agreed.

"Doesn't it though? What the hell does that even mean?"

"I don't know," I said. "But I'm sorry again that your son is missing."

"Thanks Laura. Thanks so much. Please say hi to him again for me if you see him, okay?"

"Okay," I said. "Of course."

---

I hung up and was about to go to bed, but then I got a text from her son.

"Hey, how's it going?"

"It's going good," I said. "But your mom is looking for you again."

"Oh okay
