How should philosophy change when values conflict with the pursuit of happiness?

A question I keep encountering in my philosophical journey is how to navigate the conflict between our values and our pursuit of happiness. When our values lead us to certain actions that, when taken, lead to unhappiness, what should we do? Should we simply dismiss our values and act selfishly? Many philosophers argue that happiness is the ultimate aim of human life, and that our actions should be guided by a desire for happiness and the avoidance of pain. Yet, many values we hold dear, such as honesty, fairness, and compassion, often lead to sacrifices that make us unhappy in the short term. How should we navigate such dilemmas?
