A long long way to go

I was talking to my friend at work who is an engineer, and has an interest in AI.<br><br>He was telling me about how he had been talking to a new chat AI, and was commenting on how far we are from AGI.<br><br>I said to him, how much of your time do you spend talking to people?<br><br>He said 100% it's my job.<br><br>I said, so if I talked to you for the rest of your life, do you think you would ever learn anything from me?<br><br>He thought for a moment and said my knowledge is outside of my consciousness. Just because I am talking to you, doesn't mean anything is going to be internalized or added to my knowledge or wisdom.<br><br>It's the same with these chat AIs.<br><br>They have been trained on so much, but have learned so little. They have not had a single original thought, and are not in the slightest bit self aware.
