“Make an exit plan” is terrible advice for people going through a divorce.

I’ve seen multiple “married people, listen to this before you get married” playlists come out over the past few years, and many of them have this included as an important tip. I believe this is unhealthy and discourages people from committing to one another long-term. <br><br>We should be working towards a world where people feel safe enough to be monogamous, committed, and devoted to their partners. When we encourage people to have exit plans and emergency exit dates already planned, we make it even more normal for people to not be committed to one another long-term, and to pick up and leave whenever it suits them. <br><br>Coerced or manipulative behavior should certainly be planned for, but every marriage shouldn’t be treated as likely to end poorly.
