Mom is in her 50's, and has for years been anti-gun. Over the last several years, I have tried to change her mind to no avail. She has always been staunchly Democrat and has never really questioned the talking points. I've tried talking to her about the reason we have the second amendment, showing her how many guns are out there (100 million+ households with at least one firearm) and how gun violence has been trending downward over the last 30 years. Over time she has come around somewhat and shown more interest in them. She has allowed me to take her to the range a couple of times to try out a few of my guns. Well last night, I received a call from her saying that she was afraid and asking me what guns she should buy. A couple days before that she had been suspicious of a guy hanging around her house, and decided to call the police; Turns out that it was a convicted felon with a warrant who had broken into multiple houses in her neighborhood. She found out last night that he was released from custody without even spending the night. She became afraid that he knew where she lived and would come after her. She told me "I don't feel safe anymore, and I'm not some sheep who will just wait for someone to come and save me."

She told me to pick her up, and take her to our states only gun-store, and that she wanted to look at small guns that she could carry. She settled on a Sig 238 pistol, and ended up also purchasing a Remington 870 express tactical with a pistol grip. I helped her fill out the paperwork, and we were out of there in 45 minutes. The guy working at the store couldn't believe his eyes; Literally, he walked up to me and asked "Did I just sell a gun to your mother, who's never owned a gun before? And is a Democrat?!" I told him that I never thought I'd see the day either, but she was concerned for her safety. We took the guns home, I loaded them, showed her how everything functions, and put them away in her bedroom closet. She seemed like a huge weight had come off her shoulders, and said that she never felt safer in her life.

I just thought that this would be a neat story for fellow pro-gunners to hear, and I'm glad that my mom has a newfound respect and appreciation for firearms.
