How would magic work if magic existed in the real world?

I did a quick search and nothing came up but I think it’s a fun discussion anyway.

How would magic work if magic existed in the real world? There’s no “one true way.” We all have our own idea of how we think magic should function. Post yours below. I’ll go first.

Magic in the real world would operate off of three simple rules.

\#1. Magic is fueled by intent. Magic is fueled by intent. If you want something to happen you simply think about it, decide how much of yourself to sacrifice to make it happen, cast the spell, and it happens. It’s as simple as that. The only thing that limits magic is rule \#2 and rule \#3.

\#2. Everything has a price. The most basic rule of magic is that everything has a price and most of those prices are so high that we can’t afford them. Turning invisible? Not a big deal. All you have to do is wait until nobody is paying attention to you. Want to levitate off the ground? Easy enough. All you have to do is realize that your feet are already in the air; they just happen to be standing on the ground. Want to levitate an object in front of you? That’s going to be tough. At the very least you’re going to have to find a way of levitating the air around it but at the same time making sure it is still effect by gravity. And you’re still going to have to find a way to levitate the light reflecting off of it. And you’re still going to have to find a way to make it invisible to the rest of us. At the very least you’re going to have to realize that your feet are in the air, the ground is in the air, and the air is in the air. If you’re feeling exceptionally lazy you could just levitate the entire universe. You wouldn’t have to do anything else. You would be levitating a universe with no gravity. At this point, what does it even mean for an object to levitate anyway? The whole concept of levitation relies on things that follow gravity. You would have essentially achieved nothing.

Want to teleport from one place to another? Easy enough. Just go there. Walk. Take a car. Take a plane. Take a train. Take a bus. Take a boat. If where you want to go is across the ocean we already have an easy way of getting across the ocean. Just go there. You can teleport as fast as a commercial airliner can take you somewhere. You can teleport as fast as your legs can take you somewhere. I guess the fastest way to teleport would be to realize that you already are where you want to go. At the very least you have to start walking or driving or booking tickets. If you’re lazy you could just teleport the earth to where you want to go. Find a way to instantly move the entire planet through space. If you’re feeling exceptionally lazy you could just teleport the entire solar system. At this point, what does it even mean to teleport? You would essentially be teleporting the universe. You would have essentially achieved nothing.

\#3. Nobody can teach you magic. Magic isn’t something you can learn. It’s something you have to figure out for yourself. Don’t bother trying to learn magic from other people. They can’t teach you anything. You know just as much as they do.

That’s it. There are no other rules. If you can think of a loophole in the three basic rules of magic then that’s how magic works. Welcome to magic. Go fuck yourself.
