New Year post: The field of AI has made a lot of progress the past two years, but I still don't see any "killer app" and that's a big problem.

In 2022, the world was introduced to a whole new level of AI that we never saw before, and it was exciting because of it. GenAI was everywhere, big tech was dumping billions of dollars into competing with OpenAI, startups were quickly popping up and then disappearing, and the whole field has just been on hyperspeed.

However, for me we don't have a "killer app" yet, and it's a big problem. By a "killer app," I mean an AI tool that is so good that it completely changes and disrupts the market. That is, OpenAI has basically done nothing but hype these past two years, and the proof is in the pudding.

Personally, I don't think ChatGPT has changed anything, other than allowing the tech industry to quickly post inflated numbers about how wonderful it is and to more easily suck in more venture capital.

The biggest problem OpenAI has to overcome isn't that they don't have high-quality tools, or that they don't have the talent to build it out, but it's that people like and want more human interaction and OpenAI has failed to provide that.

What I mean by this is that whether it's customer service, health, media, entertainment, etc. people want to have human interaction. We've seen this in retail, GenAI is utterly useless and has high level attrition rates. For instance, Uber/Lyft had the most "killer app" and yet they've utterly failed to change anything and were instead crushed by taxi companies.

We've also seen this in the media industry. The biggest media companies are basically just CUsomers for OpenAI, and they don't even use the tools that OpenAI has created in-house.

So, for me, I don't see a practical use for AI yet. I don't think we have any "killer app" that will completely change the market, and OpenAI has utterly failed to bring any meaningful change yet alone any "killer app" that will completely disrupt and change the market.
