The singularity is actually going to hurt more people than help, at least in the short term.

While the long-term benefits of the singularity are obvious, I personally believe in the short-term (up to 10-20 years after it hits) it's actually going to hurt more people than it helps. <br><br>Overnight, millions of people will no longer have jobs as their work will be automated away. This isn't like the industrial revolution where one job is automated away and 5 new ones are created. With the singularity, AI is going to be able to do *any* job better than a human, which means that humans will struggle to adapt to new job market. <br><br>Yes, there will be many people whose lives will drastically improve. Elderly and disabled people who can't perform certain tasks will have access to AI assistants that can perform tasks for them. However, this is nothing compared to the tens of millions of people who will be hurt as every single fast food worker, retail worker, customer service worker, NC nurse, teacher, lawyer, doctor, and the list goes on will lose their job. <br><br>Millions of people invested their time and money to learn skills that just won't be needed anymore overnight. Millions will also lose their jobs, with those who are older in age or with minimal education being the most impacted. Considering how many people live paycheck to paycheck already, this is going to be a huge shock to so many lives. Homelessness and crime will drastically increase as a result of this. <br><br>This is also a big issue considering how difficult it is to get any meaningful welfare in many countries. Only a select few have UBI, and many governments are still arguing if they should give out money to those in need. That being said, if we want to prevent tens of millions from suffering, governments will need to step in and give those in need welfare. The issue here is the cost. Governments will also need to implement some form of tax for the AI companies, which will be very difficult to do.
