As part of my attempt to manage my anxiety and depression by addressing all of my health issues at once, I am having my periodontal disease treated. I have a history of periodontal disease on both sides of my family, and have been diagnosed with several other genetic periodontal diseases. Now, my doctor thinks I might have parry Romberg syndrome, which is something I've never heard of. In fact I couldn't find any information online about it other than that it was a neurological thing that affected the face. She referred me to an oral pathologist for further testing. I went in yesterday and she asked that I not eat from 10 the night before, that I be well hydrated, she asked several more questions than my regular dentist or dentist specialist about my overall health and past diagnoses and diseases I've had as well as asking about my family history. She was also the only dentist to ever look at my entire mouth when I went in for a specific problem, and was the only dentist to ever notice several issues unrelated to what I was there for. Needless to say I really like her.

She did a thorough examination of my teeth and gums and then did a biopsy of two places on my gums. Both places were on the lower gum of the front teeth, one on the left side, one on the right. The right side biopsy was just on the surface of a bump on my gum, the left side was not visible so she had to poke a needle all the way through my gum and into the bump. These two bumps are areas where my gums are pulling away from my teeth at a rate faster than other areas, and areas where my teeth are more sensitive.

The pathologist said she believed I had parry Romberg syndrome, and that this meant my body was attacking the collagen in my gums as well as other places in my body. She said this was an issue because collagen is what holds your teeth in your gums, and I needed to make sure I was producing enough collagen to keep my teeth in my mouth.

Then she handed me a paper with a ketogenic diet on it, and told me that this was what she wanted me to be eating to help produce collagen and combat this disease. She said I needed to be seeing her every three months and she would watch closely to see if this did anything. She said if not she would refer me to other specialists.

I have only done a little research so far, but I already know I'm going to love this diet. I can have full fat everything, sugar free desserts, and as much meat, cheese, and eggs as I want. I can have vegetables but have to avoid most fruits.

I am also going to be doing periodontal maintenance as well as the regular dental cleanings.
