You need to talk to your parents

I know the next few months are gonna be hard. I know it feels easier to let your parents figure it out themselves. I know it’s tempting to avoid conversations you know will lead to conflict. But you owe it to yourself to try.

How sure are you that your parents won’t drag you to an anti-abortion protest? Or to a church that preaches against abortion? If you’re a minor, or even if you live with your parents as an adult, they have a lot more control over your life than you think. And you need to know what they’re thinking.

When I was 16, my mother took me to the march for life in DC. I didn’t know what it was, she told me it was a “pro-women’s rights” march. A month later I found out I was pregnant, and my whole family went to mass to pray for my pregnancy (I miscarried that night). If you are in control of your own life, you need to talk to your parents. If you aren’t, you owe it to yourself to know what they think. When your uterus or your life is at stake, you owe yourself a conversation you might not want to have.
