Im 31f, my husband is 32m. Last year we purchased our first home. It’s a lovely little bungalow that’s perfect for the two of us, and we have a pretty decent garden too.

I have to admit my mother in law is not the nicest lady. She can be very demanding and critical, I try my best to be polite and courteous but it’s not always easy. I find it easier to avoid her.

Recently we decided to host Christmas at our home. We only have a small living room, so it was a squeeze but we managed to get everyone in. I was quite stressed with all the cooking and the cleaning up afterwards, and my husband and I were pretty tired.

Severe weather warnings were issued for the days leading up to new year, and on the 31st our area lost power, and due to the freezing temperatures all of our pipes burst and caused a lot of damage to our home.

We had to call out a plumber, and because it was a holiday we were charged triple the usual rate. We are quite literally scraping our savings to pay to have it fixed.

A few days ago my husband’s family called up to see how we are. His mother immediately began to complain that she had to leave things at our house. She had brought cups and plates and utensils etc, to use at Christmas. We told her they were still at our home.

She then stated that if we didn’t return them she wanted to be reimbursed for the cost of them. I apologised and explained our situation to her, and promised to try and get them to her. But she began to raise her voice to me, stating that she wants them back, and if she doesn’t she wants to be reimbursed.

I told her she can have a refund but I only have cups and plates to give her. I told her the total of what we’re have to pay for the plumber, minus the amount she paid for the dishes, and told her that’s how many cups and plates she can have as a refund.

She got very angry and called me rude and ungrateful, and told me I have no manners. She called back a few hours later asking to speak to my husband, and he told me that she went off on him about how I answered the phone to her and how I spoke to her.

AITA?
