I am tired of our school’s attempt to be modern and am wondering if this is normal?

Our school has a new principal this year, and he is obsessed with 'teaching in the 21st century.' Our school has to be 'current' with the latest educational trends. I am done. I do not care if what I do is 'modern' or not. I resent being repeatedly told that if I am not teaching like it is 2024, I shouldn't be teaching.

The worst example was this past parent-teacher conference. The first parent I met with brought her child with her. The child then gave a presentation about why they scored poorly on a test. The principal was there, and the parent was thrilled. This was 'modern learning,' 'student-led delivery,' and 'the future of education.' The child basically regurgitated the very handout I gave the child on why they failed and read it off their phone. Wow.

The rest of conferences were equally as exhausting. The principal insisted that our conferences be 'student-led.' Kids come with parents and give a presentation about their strengths and weaknesses. This is not our school's first year doing this, but the principal made it much worse this year. The kids come in with a pre-written presentation they did in advisory. Maybe one out of ten kids actually know what they are talking about. The parents are thrilled that the principal is 'being modern' and that their kids are 'taking control of the learning experience.'

This got me thinking about the other 'modern' things we have at my school. There is a no-zero policy. We have 'redos and retakes' for assessments. The kids can retake an assessment as many times as they want until they get a 100%. The final exams are 'projects' the kids work on in class. Because we are modern, and 'traditional' exams are overrated. The kids have 'choice boards.' Suck it up, worksheets, this is modern learning! None of the kids know how to use the scanner. So, we have to teach them how to scan things and send them to the cloud.

I don't know what modern teaching is supposed to look like, but this has all been a disaster. I am tired of being told that if I am not down with the trends, I should quit. I am tired of my principal saying, "welcome to the 21st century!" whenever I express a concern about his methods. I am beginning to hate my career.
