CMV: Nightly News will be extinct within 3 years

Ok, so here is the argument:

* The nightly news, by its very nature, consists of a half hour of world news, a half hour of state news, and a half hour of local news.
* The majority of the news is about **wrongdoing**, rather than positive accomplishments.
* Most news stories consist of the talking head reading off of a piece of paper what a producer has written, in a studio, without any compelling imagery.
* Cable news, like CNN, MSNBC, and Fox, do a better job of news than the nightly news, but they also don't do a great job.
* Most people with smartphones get their news from social media and 3rd party aggregators, and anyone with an internet connection can go to the website of the newspaper of record (like nytimes.com), the website of a highly respected news outlet (like bbc.co.uk/news), or the website of a local newspaper, and see the news without having to wait for 6:00pm.
* Nightly news programs are more expensive to produce than digital news and news infused entertainment programs, and the cost justifies a significant reduction in viewership.
* The only thing that continues to justify nightly news is that, in the United States, the networks are required to produce a minimum amount of news programming in order to have broadcast licenses. However, this amount is less than the amount of news currently being produced by the networks.

As a result, in 3 years, there will be no more nightly news programs on the major networks. There will, of course, still be news cable networks, news radio, news websites, and news entertainment programs like the Daily Show and Last Week Tonight.

Show me why I am wrong.

Edit: I tried to reply to most of the comments with my argument, but, after about 4 hours, that became impossible.

I'd like to make a couple of apologies: first, I apologize for writing a CMV argument and then forgetting that 1. You need to be willing to change your mind in a CMV, and 2. You need to add a TL;DR. I apologize for this, and I will never do either again.

Second, I apologize for a couple of places in my replies where I got a bit testy. I apologize for this. I appreciate all of the time everyone put into this discussion, and I should have been more gracious. If you take issue with my tone in some of my replies, I apologize for that.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm a little disappointed that 99% of the comments were "you are wrong" rather than "you are wrong because". It's really cool to see how many of you agree with me.

Third, I've always thought that the nightly news is a relic of the past, but I also thought that it would take longer for it to go away. The reason I got prompted to write this post was a recent quarterly earnings report from CBS, which indicated that their nightly news program had lost 37% of its audience since August of 2019. It's nice when evidence supports our preconceptions.

I don't have any other CMV posts planned, and I will not post again until I have something that is more clearly an argument, and less clearly a rant.
