Microsoft to cut 10,000 jobs as it faces slowing demand

Microsoft is cutting 10,000 jobs, almost 5% of its workforce, as the tech industry deals with slower demand and a changing world.<br><br>The firm said the jobs would go by the end of the third quarter, with some employees told whether they were affected on Wednesday.<br><br>It is the latest big tech firm to cut jobs, with Amazon cutting 18,000 roles and Salesforce 10% of its workforce.<br><br>The Seattle-based technology giant is also taking a $1.2bn (£960m) charge associated with the cost-cutting plan.<br><br>Microsoft - which owns LinkedIn and is behind the Windows operating system - will also be closing some of its leases.<br><br>Chief executive Satya Nadella called the decision difficult but necessary.<br><br>"It's important to note that while we are eliminating roles in some areas, we will continue to hire in key strategic areas," he said in a note to staff.<br><br>"Microsoft will emerge from this transition stronger and more competitive."<br><br>He said affected employees had been notified and others would receive details by the end of the week.<br><br><br>BBC News
