I don’t want to make this post for fame or revenge. I want to make this post to help raise awareness into why some people become mass shooters. I believe this will help people understand and empathize with the causes and possibly help the mentally ill and people in similar positions.

In 1999, my dad killed 3 people and injured 5 others. I was only 6 years old at the time. It was because of years of abuse and my dad eventually snapped.

After this, I lived in a world of shame and secrecy. People stared at me and called me “masshole’s daughter.” I eventually went into a shell of depression and anxiety. My mom divorced my dad and I haven’t seen him since.

I’m not making this post to be pitied. I don’t want sympathy, I’m just fine now. But when I heard about the recent mass shooting in New Zealand, it brought back memories.

My father knew how to exacerbate the mental pain of others. He knew exactly how to exploit the insecurities of women and other vulnerable people. I think he was a psychopath. He would say “I’m going to be a famous mass shooter” before he did it. He didn’t hide his intent.

I’m making this post to spread awareness. I want people to be aware that these mass shooters, even the ones that are mentally ill, can be manipulative, narcissistic, and have a tendency to exploit people and be exploitative of themselves.

I’ve met other people in my shoes who have parents who were mass shooters. We talk and it helps to talk. It’s therapeutic. I think people like us can help spread awareness into what causes mass shootings and the ripple effects on the people and families affected.

That’s all I really need to say. Thank you for listening. I hope this helps spread awareness and maybe help people empathize with the causes and effects of mass shooters.
