Two months ago, i gave my wife an ultimatum when it came to guns. She agreed and the results are good.

She had to show a good faith effort to educate herself about firearms. She doesn't need to like them or carry one, just be neutral in regards to the topic. I agreed to get life insurance as it is much less than what a divorce would have cost me. I'm glad that we weren't on /r/offmychest yet.

A month ago, she went to the range. She shot a 1911 and a Glock 17. She wasn't overwhelmed by recoil and thought they were easy to use and not very painful. The next week, she asked me how to get a concealed carry license for Illinois. I gave her the info and she got everything but the state portion done in a week. She's waiting on the state to get back to her. She has an appointment with a trainer (a police officer) for next week.

The day before yesterday, i was in the hospital. I was in a head-on collision and had a broken right arm and separated left shoulder. When i came home from the hospital, all of the guns that were locked away were out and laid out on our bed. She said she knows that there is a chance of break-ins due to my absence and she wanted to know if she could defend herself. She put them away on the safe, then promptly took them out and locked them away again. I was happy to see her being proactive and safe.

Yesterday, i had to have surgery on my arm to fix the break. I was in a lot of pain and wasn't feeling well. I asked her to bring me a plate of food and a glass of water. Since i wasn't feeling great, i had our G19 next to me. She picked it up and placed it on the kitchen counter. She fed me, gave me water, and ensured that i was in minimal pain (given the situation). After, she put the pistol next to me.

While i really wish that the accident didn't happen and that i wasn't in pain, i am so happy to have such a supportive and loving wife.

edit: For those who are wondering, she didn't have a problem with guns, she just had a fear of them. The more that she learned about firearms, the less she feared them. She's very intelligent and level headed. The accident scared her a bit because she never saw me in so much pain and unable to perform tasks. I'm very lucky to have her.
