The fact that we work until we die, just for the privilege of being alive, is seriously messed up.

I've been searching for words to express how I feel about this for a long time, but haven't managed to find them. The point of this post is to convey how crazy it is that we *have* to work, with no option to not work (exceeding basic needs is required to contribute to society), and we *must* work until we die, with no retirement, social safety net, or any other option. If we choose a family over work, money, and comfort, we are encouraged, but that choice does not exclude us from the main choosing we have to make every day: work or work harder. Our bodies are animals, our souls are machines, and our lives are a commodity.

We should have the option to not work. We should have the option to die if we want. Instead, we are forced to endure the misery of toil, with just a few luxuries to keep us going, and the threat of poverty to keep us in line. Why are these things acceptable? Why are we even here? What is the point of our lives, besides work, and our social relationships? What are our basic needs for, so we can just work for the privilege to exist? What is the purpose of our lives besides work, work, work, until the day we die?

I would be deemed crazy if I told my friends and relatives that we shouldn't work, and that there should be an option for us to exist for free. But is there anything more sensible? If you choose to have children, you pay more taxes. If you are sick, you pay more taxes. If you are young, you have to pay taxes. If you are old, you paid taxes. Is it fair for some people to be required to contribute to society more than others, while others contribute nothing to society? If you are single, you pay taxes. If you have a family, you pay taxes. Is it fair for people to pay taxes without any choice, while others don't have to pay taxes? Why do we have to work, instead of having an alternative, like universal basic income?

We should have the choice. We should be able to die if we want, and be able to exist for free. The way things are now is just insane, and our societies have been like this for centuries. I can't imagine ever being wealthy to the point of being able to retire, because I know that my wealth is the product of blood and toil, and it will eventually be gone. I can't imagine ever not having to worry about paying my bills on time, or not having to worry about rent or food again. Why do we put up with this? Why do we tolerate this? Why do we allow ourselves to exist in such a way?
