I found out the other day that my guy friends husband, who’s also my husbands best friend, is actually a woman. Not deep, not secret, not because he was going through a transition.. but he is biologically a woman. I don’t know how I didn’t figure it out sooner, i kept thinking he looked different but couldn’t quite put my finger on it. My husband and I went over there to hang out and my friend was in the middle of shaving his chest. I was obviously confused and asked “you’re a dude, right?” He just laughed and said “yeah. i’m a dude” he was holding a razor at the time and i don’t like to get too close to people when they have sharp objects. But he was so candid and funny about it that I forgot my confusion for a while. When I finally had a chance to ask again he told me “yes!! I’re dead as a doorknob” he said this in the most matter of fact way. He showed me his id (which i didn’t actually look at) but it looked old enough to have been from his pre-transition. His legal name matches his birth name which also helps my theory. He told me later on that he had surgery when he was 16 but started hormone blockers when he was 12 and he’s been on hormones ever since. I’m not sure how often people get hormone blockers but clearly he’s been on hormones long enough for his body to really react. He still has most of his body and facial hair, chest and facial hair is pretty easy to keep once you start hormones but his arms and legs are still pretty hairy. I asked him why he doesn’t shave his legs and said they are “too hairy tosh and it tickles too much”. he said it’s a pain in the ass to keep his facial hair shaved. his hair is pretty long too and I’ve never seen him braid it but I’m pretty sure that’s why he has so much facial hair. His hair is too long to be maintenance of just letting it grow out, so, idk. he said it’s easier to keep it as is.

He is fully willing to show people that he’s a woman but doesn’t really want to, which is totally fine. he has a lot of body art and doesn’t want it covered so he’ll show his chest in long sleeves but won’t show it in short sleeves. he won’t show his legs or anything. he has tattoos of his legal name on his knuckles which he’s pretty proud of. he’s also a lot of other places but that’s probably too much to list. I’m not saying he’s ashamed of being a woman, he just prefers to be thought of as a dude, and i respect that.

My husband doesn’t have any body hair at all. he’s been on hormones since he was 13. he’s been full time since he was 16 and he’s not interested in getting his genitals altered in anyway. he’s completely fine with everyone referring to him as a she. he has no tattoos either. he has no body hair and is fully willing to show people his body. he prefers to be thought of as a woman and i respect that as well.

i know sex and gender is a complex issue, but i just find it interesting and wanted to share.
