Why do politicians all insist the economy is doing very well thanks to their leadership?

Whenever there is an election, all politicians from all parties insist the economy is doing very well and they are responsible for it. This is all just campaigning of course, but how is it that every politician claims the economy is doing well as a result of their great leadership, no matter the country?
