Why is a calorie so cheap?

A lot of modern problems are rooted in a single issue: price of food has become so cheap that you can afford to buy food with just a few hours of labour, but healthcare has become so expensive that you can't afford medical treatment while working for minimum wage.

Malnutrition that you get from cheap food is making you sick, but minimum wage isn't enough to pay for the medical treatment of conditions being caused by cheap food like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, some cardiovascular diseases, some cancers. If you work an honest job for minimum wage, you have to choose between either eating or providing for your health.

Obsesity rates are skyrocketing. Diseases that are caused by cheap food are also on the rise. You can't afford to eat healthy. You can't afford to be sick. This is a major public health crisis in the first world.

Even animals eat better than us. Even dogs eat better than us. Dog food is of better nutritional quality than what is served at school cafeterias and fast food chains. Feed a dog kibble or a human Heinze ketchup - who is healthier?

Why is poor nutrition so affordable? Why is healthy food so out of reach? It makes no sense. This isn't how nature works. Your average cow gets grass of better quality than your average human.

Why is everything so messed up? Why does modern capitalism produce so many troubling issues?
